I am a professor of Earth & Environmental Sciences at Denison University, a small liberal arts college in central Ohio. I study volcanoes for my research and have worked on volcanoes in Chile, New Zealand, California and Oregon. If you’re curious about what I do at Denison, check out my faculty page. I’m always looking for undergraduate students interested in volcanoes to come to Denison and work with me!

I’ve been writing about volcanoes and geology in general since 2008. The original Eruption s was hosted at Science Blogs, BigThink and Wired. Then I wrote Rocky Planet for Discover. I’ve written articles for a variety of media sites, including Daily Beast and have been appeared on NPR, the BBC and more. I love talking about volcanoes and how we can better understand them to prevent volcanic disasters.

You can find me on Bluesky (erikklemetti.bsky.social), where I help keep my over 4,700 followers up to date on volcanism across the globe.

Quote of the week

“It’s not far-fetched that almost everywhere in the world where you have volcanoes you have mythologies or new gods being created.”

~ Werner Herzog
