My blogging frequency might be a little scattershot for the next few weeks thanks to the American Geophysical Union Winter Meeting in San Francisco (if you’re at the meeting, you can always hear me talk about rhyolite genesis in New Zealand) and then the holidays. I will be experimenting with blogging from my new iPod Touch during the meeting if I hear something interest – yes, live-blogging a geology meeting, is this a first? –  but that might also end up being an abysmal failure. I suppose it is the closest I’ll come to live-blogging the other Winter Meeting

  1. That is a cool-looking session; definitely going onto my first-pass list (which I’d better get to work on).

Well, more or less that the rhyolite is formed by the partial melting of a crystal mush (not total melt), which then is extracted from the crystal residue to form the eruptable rhyolite melt. At least, that is the long-and-short of it!

Oh wow, you got all my neurons firing with that talk on TVZ rhyolites..
I’m way out of my depth here (not being a geochemist) but did I understand you correctly, that you don’t think the rhyolites were formed by melting of granit (crystal mush) (presumably by some kind of hot mafic? intrusion) but by “liquid segregation” which I take to mean the magma chamber undergoes a process of separation with the rhyolite separating out?

Ron – I would but my Wednesday night is taken already. Too bad!

  5. So will you be joining us on Wednesday evening for the GeoBlogger dinner? http://shearsensibility.blogspot.com/2008/11/geoblogger-meet-up-at-agu.html

“It’s not far-fetched that almost everywhere in the world where you have volcanoes you have mythologies or new gods being created.”
